CURRICULUM

Lesson
One

Chapter 1: Birth Culture and Intuition

Everyone learns about birth at some point, and this understanding can profoundly shape our choices and outlooks on bringing new life into the world. This chapter invites us to reconnect with our innate intuition —a powerful design that enables us to welcome our babies with strength and dignity.

Chapter 2: The Gathering

Parents receive guidance on gathering tools and supplies, including a birth ball, rebozo, and other comfort items for labor and birth. Additionally, they will learn massage and counterpressure techniques in this lesson to use during pregnancy and labor, allowing their partner to gain a deeper understanding of how to support you during the birthing process.

Chapter 3: Hormonal Goodness

Hormones are what make the world go round, and in this chapter, parents will learn the value that their hormones play in their experience of childbirth.

Chapter 4: Birth Support

When parents surround themselves with loving and supportive people during birth, it can really make a difference! In this lesson, I help parents think about who they’d like on their birth team.

Lesson
Two

Chapter 5: Practicing Childbirth

Childbirth education is not complete without practicing relaxation, breathing, visualization, positive affirmations, and intuition – components that will parents throughout their pregnancy, labor, and birth. The partner will benefit from learning these practices alongside the mother early in pregnancy.

Chapter 6: Your Beautiful Body

In this chapter, we focus on muscles and ligaments that affect movement and position changes, helping to build an understanding of the "whys" behind physical preparation for birth.

Chapter 7: Body Wisdom for Birth

Navigating Your Birth encourages mothers to participate in specific stretching and exercise routines and provides more than 35 illustrations of stretching and yoga. Stretching is one of the best activities you can do to help prepare you for the birth of your baby.

Lesson
Three

Chapter 8 – Influencing Your Baby’s Position

Learn to influence your baby to be in a good position for birth through both optimal fetal and maternal positioning. This chapter also covers your baby's amazing molding skull as it squeezes through the birth canal, various birth presentations and positions, what to do if your baby is breech, and how to do belly mapping.

Chapter 9: Your Baby’s Pathway

Next is your baby's pathway through the pelvis—illustrated with 24 drawings. During this venture, you will learn about the type of pelvis you may have, what happens when your baby drops into your pelvis, and finally, how your baby travels down the birth canal and into the world.

Chapter 10: Is it Baby Time?

Truly, the question every mother has is, “Is  it baby time?” Everything from signs of labor, what your cervix is doing, dilation, contraction patterns, and timing contractions is covered in Chapter 10, along with some exciting birth stories!

Lesson
Four

Chapter 11: The Mother’s Journey

Chapter 11 is about your journey through birth — what stages of labor you will experience, what contractions may feel like, and what coping strategies you can use, such as movement and water. There are more than 44 illustrations of positions during labor and birth that you can practice.

Chapter 12: Make More Room

While Chapter 11 helped you understand fluid movements for a smoother birth experience, knowing how to make more room in your pelvis for your baby through specific positions and techniques offers one more level that deliberately opens your pelvis.

Chapter 13: Hospital Birth

The world of birthing your baby is far different than the world of the hospital. In this chapter, you will learn tips and strategies on using the hospital bed to your advantage, such as using the birth bar and position changes if you have an epidural.

Lesson
Five

Chapter 14: The First Hour

Welcoming your baby during the busy, emotional moments of birth should be a top priority, as this chapter emphasizes. From the third stage of labor, when the placenta is delivered, to skin-to-skin contact, bonding, and the undisturbed first hour of your baby's life, these are all experiences of parenthood that you will treasure forever.

Chapter 15: Your Baby’s Experience

While Chapter 14 introduced the first hour of your baby’s life, Chapter 15 details everything from the newborn exam to making parenting decisions about newborn procedures and tests, such as the Hepatitis B vaccination, vitamin K for your baby, and circumcision. You will also learn tips on baby care as well as breastfeeding basics.

Chapter 16: Birth Interrupted

This chapter discusses interruptions during birth, including environmental disturbances and medical routines. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a quiet and calm atmosphere, eating during labor, and staying well-rested and energized throughout the labor and birth process.

Lesson
Six

Chapter 17: Intervention

This chapter walks you through all the possible reasons and methods of intervention, such as pharmaceutical pain relief, induction of labor, cesarean, and instrumental birth. It highlights when these interventions might be helpful and when they are unnecessary.

Chapter 18: What If, and Other What Ifs

The most difficult of all the chapters, “What If” questions need answering. What ifs include complications that can occur during pregnancy, the birth process, and other what ifs, such as having twins, a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), being an older mom, and other variations of normal.

Chapter 19: Positive Birth

Know your rights. Know that birth can have a positive experience no matter where you give birth.

Chapter 20 - Scribbling

The final chapter, "Scribbling," is about creating an intentional birth plan. So often, birth plans start with “I prefer.” Navigating Your Birth will give you the tools to make a less ambiguous statement. An intentional message makes it clear you are an autonomous birthing individual capable of making decisions for your labor and birth.
